House of Commons speech on Universal Credit

October 18, 2017

In the House of Commons today, I gave a speech urging the Government to halt the roll-out of the Universal Credit system this winter.

It is clear that the current Universal Credit application process is not fit for purpose. The lengthy delays in receiving payments is having a devastating effect on families, who are struggling to feed their children and cope with fuel poverty. Yet, the Government... are determined to aggressively roll-out the complex online system in Cardiff early next year.

I am not against simplifying the system, I welcome that, but the Government have ignored professional advice demonstrating that this new system is not ready, as well as evidence that delays are forcing people to apply for emergency food, and be evicted from their homes, which is simply unacceptable.

"I urge the Government: do not let homelessness, evictions, debts and misery pile up. Do not allow destitution to return to this country. Listen to the overwhelming evidence, halt the roll-out and don’t make parents choose between sending their child to bed at night either cold or hungry."
Please get in touch with me if you live in Cardiff North and have any concerns about this.
