Press Release: Votes at 16

November 1, 2017

1st November 2017

Anna McMorrin MP for Cardiff North will join MPs in House of Commons to support Votes at 16 Private Member’s Bill.

On Friday 3rd November, Members of Parliament are set to debate a Private Member’s Bill to lower the voting age in parliamentary elections to 16 years of age. This will be the Second Reading of the ‘Representation of the People (Young People’s Enfranchisement and Education) Bill, that has been put forward by Jim McMahon MP.

The ‘Votes at 16’ campaign has a long history dating back to 2003, with the EU Referendum Bill accepting Votes at 16, only to later be overturned in December 2015, when the Bill returned to the House of Lords. Despite this disappointing setback, the Votes at 16 campaign has continued, and by using social media, coalition members, and politicians to raise awareness, has gained widespread support and media coverage.

Ahead of the debate on Friday, Anna McMorrin MP for Cardiff North, along with Councillor Dilwar Ali, met with Marzana and Nasir to find out why they want votes from 16. The students from Llanishen High School explained that it does not seem right that at 16 they can join the army, get married and have a job – but they can’t vote.

Anna McMorrin MP for Cardiff North said, “Giving a voice to 16- and 17-year-olds is one of the ways we can try to build a better democracy in the UK for everyone. There is a widening gulf between people and politics – but giving 16- and 17-year-olds a vote provides an opportunity to get the next generation more engaged with politics, and is therefore vital for the future health of our democracy.”

“Marzana and Nasir are socially and politically aware, and ready to be more active citizens. So I want to do everything I can to support them, and other 16 and 17 year olds, who hold many responsibilities in our society, to be able to influence key decisions that affect their lives and ensure youth issues are represented.”

“It’s time young people had a voice in our democracy and a say in their futures. It’s time for votes at 16.”

End.
