Response to EU Withdrawal Bill vote

September 12, 2017

Following last night’s vote in the House of Commons on the EU Withdrawal Bill, I am deeply disappointed with the result.

The Bill is an affront to parliamentary democracy, containing fundamental flaws that give huge and accountable powers to government Ministers.  It will also undermine and introduce restrictions on the devolved administrations in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, rather than leading to the wider devolution of power we need to see to communities across the UK.

At a time when we need unity and clarity, the Brexit process is now more uncertain and chaotic.

Labour will seek to amend and remove the worst aspects from the Bill as it passes through Parliament however, it is hard to see how this Bill can ever be fit for purpose.
